The watercolor process used to create this image is Watercolor Batik. Rice paper is used as the surface; not watercolor paper. Rice paper is fragile and requires a delicate application of paint and wax. Melted wax is used as a resist to preserve color values and to add texture to  the painting. This is a time consuming process as each layer of color must be thoroughly dry before the melted wax is applied. Once the painting is completed and the wax dried, then the entire piece is crumbled to create crevices. A process of infusing color into the crevices begins. Once all components are dry, the wax is removed by repetitive hot ironing. Finally, the rice paper is adhered to watercolor paper for ease of handling as it is matted and framed.
